Phyllis and Sterling had moved to Indiana where Sterling was employed as a Junior Soil Scientist. He soon became the top soil scientist in the state. He was offered the best business opportunity of his life. Eli Lilly and the Farm clinic offered him "the Moon." They chose to live out west instead, where their families lived and where they thought it would be best to raise their family.

Sterling asked for a transfer. It came in December of 1945. They drove their new Ford west to Weizer, Idaho and moved into a home on 10 acres. Barr was born in April of 1946. After a short time, Sterling was transferred to Rigby, Idaho.

The following spring, they moved to Warm River, Idaho. While there, all of their brothers and sisters visited them in their cabin, which at one time had been a bar. Warm River is where Phyllis fell out of a boat at 7 months pregnant. She didn't know how to swim and was luckily rescued.

The family moved to Idaho Falls where Colleen was born in October of 1947. Sterling wanted to try a different kind of work so he bought a spudnut shop, a business that he ran for several years .

Sterling's first real estate venture, made possible by his brother-in-law, David W. Evans and his brother, Richard L. Evans, was a monument in Temple View Park Subdivision. He became a successful developer, builder, and realtor.

In March of 1952, Paul was born and the family moved into a new house in Ammon, Idaho, built by Sterling's business, "Cannon Realty."

Kim was born next in June of 1953 and Joel was born two years later, in April of 1956. The family moved to a beautiful new home built by Sterling, on Sunnyside Road in Ammon. Doralee was born January of 1959. Val was born two years later in April of 1961.

Sterling and Phyllis didn't travel much while their children were growing up. Sterling took Phyllis to Mexico as a surprise in 1956.

After the children were grown, Phyllis and Sterling made up for lost time and traveled all over the United States, visiting their children in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Missouri, Hawaii, and Colorado.
